New Kirby Site

Yay new kirby site is up! Love this CMS. Was much harder to decide on a new layout than actually implement it. Currently I am using the following plugins; disqus (still migrating), exporter for wordpress, twitter, dribbble and contactform. I built into the panel/blueprint system the ability to change out the background, menu, button and footer colors on the fly. Something that would have been a pain on a page per page basis, at least for me, to build in Wordpress.

Exporting the old blog over was easy with the exporter but setting up the new format since it doesn't pull images was time consuming so I have not moved over anything previous to 2011. Will do that over time. For anyone with a very large blog going over many years the migration might not be a quick thing. However if you are wanting to implement something this like I am, it might be worth it.

This migration helped me with a client's site in the works. I started this project to better understand how well it works putting together a site with Kirby and I am very pleased. The process has been pretty seamless the only limitations I have found are in my own PHP knowledge. I would imagine someone who was very proficient with PHP would absolutely love this cms.

Projet teaser:

Working with Gareth Redfern to answer a client's need for a dynamic site for the Katy Holmes Trust website. The finished site will be fully responsive with some interesting svg animations. Keeping with the logo and the client's color wishes we have created colorful site in memory of Katy while keeping the content accessible and organized for the adult reader. Visit a full size mock here.

Pixa:

Such a wonderful tool. I have been hunting for an Extensis portfolio alternative and it seemed Picasa just didn't cut it. This wonderful app allows me to create "live folders" and catalogs all of the images in each folder. You can group images by folders, projects and search them via tags you create or use the one the app automatically applies. If you are looking for a complete document solution this won't work but if you are wanting to just be able to find images quickly like me this is perfect.

http://www.pixa-app.com

Handsome Stats:

Great tool to make the analytics information make more sense and quickly. For more in depth reporting I would recommend the standard google interface but for a quick overview of what is going on this is great.

http://www.handsomestats.com

Sketch:

I think I may have found a Photoshop replacement, which I wasn't looking for and I have been using PS since 2.0 hehe. It is a cross between PS and Fireworks. Just enough of both and some added tools that I really enjoy. I have only created a few things in it but so far it seems like a dream. Being able to move objects around and resize them with ease is such a plus. So far I have not missed PS on any project I have worked on. Later on I will do a bigger review of this one.

So I notice on twitter a link to this contest asking participants to declare their love for the internet and I am immediately excited. I had planned on doing a step by step documentation of my process but time was short on this and about half way through decided to forgo that idea hehe. I may upload later what I did document including the initial wireframes. It was super fun to work on and I got to test out a few things I had been meaning to try including the Kirby Flat File CMS which is full of WIN. I purchased a license and think I might be using it on the next project with Jason Brimer instead of Wordpress. (Sorry WP) Anyway take a look and let me know what you think? http://ihearttheinter.net

So for this Holiday I decided to be a practical gift giver. If you are setting up your own brand or one of your client's on a few of the social media sites you know what a hassle it is to keep track of the sizes for each and then build out your brand on each of these. Well this site addressed some of those issues with this template hub.am/UL1jy2 but I have taken it further and created each of these to scale and in PSD objects to easily edit.
